Southeast Asian Dance Traditions

Dance, Music, and Theaters of Bali   Pages from the Bali Online Web site, with brief descriptions of wali (sacred) dances performed for the gods in the inner court of a Hindu temple and balih-balihan dances that are performed for the entertainment of spectators. Information on Balinese music and wayang (shadow theater) is also given, as are a few links to sites of gamelan orchestras in the United States.

Cambodian Classical Dance   Compiled and maintained by Chamroeun Yin of Philadelphia, a classically trained Cambodian dancer, this site is devoted to Cambodian court dance. In addition to links to sites related to Cambodian culture, it offers links to sites on dance in Thailand, Indonesia, Burma (Myanmar), the Philippines, and Malaysia.

Malaysian Dances   This exceptionally useful Web site is maintained by Dalilah Salieh of Ampang, Selangor. It offers detailed information on numerous Malay dances, arranged in four categories: court dances, folk dances, theatrical dances, and modern dances. Further, it provides similar information on Chinese dances in Malaysia; on Indian dances in Malyasia; on the dances of Sabah and Sarawak, the two largest states of East Malaysia; and on "Portuguese dance," still popular after four hundred years among descendants of the Portuguese settlement in Malacca.

Philippine Dance Links   The dance pages from Tanikalang Ginto, "the Philippines' most comprehensive Web directory," list more than eighty Web sites on Philippine music and dance of all genres.

Southeast Asian Arts, Music, Literature, and Performance Homepage   Compiled and maintained by Stephen Arod Shirreffs, this informative minisite is a component of his extraordinary site called Southeast Asia Web, devoted to "Internet resources for scholars, researchers, and friends of Southeast Asian studies." The range of coverage of this site is surprisingly broad, and the scholarship evident in its pages seems impeccable.
