Eighteenth- and Nineteenth-Century Social Dance

The Circle of Victoriana   This Web ring was created to link all sites on the World Wide Web that are related to the reign of Victoria, who became queen of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland in 1837 and empress of India in 1876, ruling a vast colonial empire until her death in 1901.

The Colonial Dancing Master   Online access to the catalog of a shop that offers books and tapes relating to dance, song, music, social customs, and clothing of colonial America and eighteenth-century England. The Web site is simple but serviceable.

Commonwealth Vintage Dancers   This performing group, based in Melrose, Massachusetts, specializes in research, reconstruction, and revival of dances of three major periods: the mid-nineteenth century (1850s–1860s), the late nineteenth century (the 1890s), and the ragtime era (1900–1920s). Dance classes are also given.

La Compagnie Folklorique Fanny Thibout et les Tiesses di Hoye   This performing group specializes in the dances, games, songs, and music of Liège (Beligum) during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. Its Web site is generously accessible in four languages: French, English, Dutch, and Walloon.

Eighteenth-Century Societies   A collection of links to many scholarly societies focusing on the eighteenth century, including the International Society for Eighteenth-Century Studies, the American Society for Eighteenth-Century Studies, and the Canadian Society for Eighteenth-Century Studies.

Hof-Dantzer   An ensemble founded in 1991 by Hannelore Unfried in Vienna, performing a repertory of domestic dance from the Biedermeier period and ballroom dances from the Strauss era as well as dances of the Viennese High Baroque. Under the name La Belle Danse, the group offers seminars, classes, workshops, and a summer course. The Web site is available in German or English.

Period Events and Entertainments Re-Creation Society   PEERS, based in San Francisco, is a nonprofit corporation dedicated to remembering, researching, and re-creating the performing arts of the past.

Social Daunce Irregulars   A group devoted to reviving the tradition of the Victorian grand ball. Since 1988, it has been staging events and giving dance classes in the Pasadena area of southern California.

Società di Danza   Directed by Fabio Mòllica, the Società di Danza focuses on historical research on nineteenth-century dance "to reconstruct a dance system belonging to the European tradition." Its Web site, available in both English and Italian, gives information on its activities.

Vintage Dance Society   This organization and its performing troupe, Polite Society, are located in Bloomfield, Connecticut. They are dedicated to the reconstruction and preservation of the music and dances of the Victorian and ragtime eras.

Western Social Dance   This site provides an overview of the collection of the dance manuals in the Library of Congress, including those dealing with social dance in the late eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. Links to the manuals themselves are also provided.
